ugg australia classic short boots chestnut gets the goal and sends Marcellus to another Section III Class B title
Chittenango Marcellus High School girls soccer coach Laurie Updike describes Madison Belvito as being a bit on the shy side. The ninth grader describes herself as cold, which is why she replaced her cleats with Ugg boots as soon as the game ended.
There was also something cold about how Belvito used her speed to run down a pass that started some 40 yards away that seemed to slip through the defense into space just outside the goalie box. And in the flick of her right foot, Belvito deposited the winning goal in overtime.
The score gave Marcellus a 2 1 victory over Clinton Friday night at Chittenango High School to give the Mustangs the Section III Class B championship. against the champion of Section II.
Marcellus junior Molly MacLachlan started the winning play near midfield. She saw Belvito streaking down the right side of the field and sent the ball on a diagonal pass that rolled between Clinton defenders and into open space.
Belvito used her speed to reach the ball first. She never hesitated. Even though Clinton goalie Marissa Cornelius came out to challenge, Belvito sent the blast immediately to the goal and into the net. It came 92 seconds into the first overtime.
was no doubt in my mind Maddie was going to get to the ball, Updike said. our speedster. She the one who you would think above everyone else gets to every ball. Belvito said she was not the initial target of the pass from MacLachlan.
was supposed to go to Lexy (Bird), Belvito said. didn quite get to her foot. Then it got to me. I just shot it and it went in.
knew she wasn going to be able to touch it because it was too far ahead of her. So I thought I run onto it. I got the touch before the goalie did. I just shot it immediately. I knew I had no time. She was going to come out and get me. So I had to shoot it as fast as I could. Mustangs won their fifth Section III title since 2003 and their second in three years. They also avenged last year painful loss to Lowville on penalty kicks in the championship game. That it happened on the same field was not lost on the players.
Marcellus dominated long stretches of the game against Clinton. With superior possession,
it seemed most of the game was played in front of Cornelius. It took 50 minutes for the Mustangs to finally break through. It came after a bizarre series of throw ins in which nearly 10 consecutive tries were knocked out of bounds by the Comets. One finally got to the corner, where it was crossed in front of the goal. Abigail Fallon and Belvito converged on the crease. Fallon got the touch and the goal, though Belvito made sure after it had crossed the line by hitting it again.
But Clinton kept hustling and it finally paid off. After Cornelius made the game’s best save on a short range blast by Brielle Filtch, the Warriors outhustled Marcellus on some 50 50 balls in the midfield and got a play going. Maureen Lewis of Clinton won a possession near the sideline and sent a perfect feed on goal. Hannah Shankman got to the pass and ripped it into the net with 6:26 left in regulation for a Clinton goal.
It was a jolt. Updike said it was a good jolt because the Mustangs refocused their efforts. Clinton never got another good scoring chance and once the game got into overtime, the Mustangs stepped on the gas pedal, got the winning goal and put the Warriors away. They were once again Section III champions.
