Soft Pretzels: Fun Baking for Kids

Curated By Tammy Paquin Leave a Comment

With three growing boys, the battle to keep healthy, easy and relatively inexpensive snacks in the house always seems to be one I feel I’m losing. Combine that with the fact that the time it takes to keep up with the baking and cooking leaves me feeling like that’s all I do: bake, bake and bake some more! So when I found this soft pretzel recipe, I knew I had a win/ win recipe! It was fun and easy for the boys to make for me and provided them with an inexpensive and healthy snack!

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Mix the ingredients for the pretzels in your stand mixer or bread machine like you were making bread. Allow dough to rise for about an hour or about doubled. Divide the dough into equal portions (at least 12). The kids can roll the portions into long ropes and them fashion them into pretzels (whatever shape makes them happy).

Allow the pretzels to rise another 20 minutes or so and if you want that brown, caramelized outer pretzel,
kensington boots ugg Fun Baking for Kids
start heating your water with the baking soda. You don’t want it boiling but you do want hot. If you have a slotted spoon or other supportive kitchen utensil, it’s perfect because you can place the pretzel on the spoon and ‘cook’ it in the water for 30 seconds before removing it and placing on the greased baking sheet. Repeat with all the pretzels.

You can easily skip the boiling water bath and allow the pretzels to rise and then go to the egg wash and toppings step. The pretzels will bake to a light ‘bread’ color.

Then brush the egg wash over the pretzels and sprinkle them with kosher salt, or cinnamon/sugar, maybe a mix of Parmesan cheese and Italian seasonings. Bake the pretzels for about 18 minutes until golden brown. Remove them to a cooling rack when they’re done and hope they’ll last longer than 2 hours in the house!

Inching her way across the overhanging rock ledge, this hiker is getting perilously close to the edge of the world.

The German hiker is dwarfed by the sheer scale and beauty of the landscape beneath her feet as she takes in the breathtaking view of the Norwegian Fjords.

This incredible image was captured by British photographer Jay Patel, 42, from Wallington in Surrey, after a five hour hike in Skjeggedal, in the southern Norwegian Fjords.

‘It’s the most amazing photo I’ve taken and is quite unworldly.

‘Hiking up there, the trails are quite discreet, so you don’t see it coming and then you round a corner and it suddenly appears.

‘I went and sat on the edge and dangled my feet over but it was quite windy so I was leaning back the whole time.

‘I was lucky to get the right conditions. The light gives it that bit of depth and scale to the scene.’

Gaye Maxwell, manager of the shoe department at Dillard’s, says UGG still is its No. 1 selling boot, followed closely by Frye boots. Both brands are “flying out of the store,” Maxwell says.

The popularity of the boots, particularly UGG, surprises Dillard’s manager Bill Graves.

“I thought they’d last a few seasons, but it gets bigger every year,” he says. “In fact, the popularity of boots across the board is amazing. I see them on everybody even babies.”

The UGG sheepskin boot has been around since the late 1970s and, because of its warmth, became popular among surfers on the West Coast. By the late 1990s, celebrities began wearing UGGs and, after being featured by Oprah on “Oprah’s Favorite Things” show in 2000, they skyrocketed to fame.

The popularity of boots doesn’t surprise Victoria Underwood of Dayton, Tenn. She owns 15 pairs and is always on the hunt for more.

Underwood, 32, owner of the Insyde Outsyde Shop in Red Bank, says she wears boots most every day, except in summer. She’s partial to flat heel boots because of the comfort.

“I wear them with jeans, dresses and skirts,” Underwood says. “My favorite pair is an $80 pair of Jessica Simpson boots that have lasted about four years, but I’ll probably replace them with some from Frye, though my husband isn’t a fan of the price tag. I also love my red Hunter Wellies from Neiman Marcus because they are really stylish and keep my feet dry.”

Frye boots range in cost from around $300 to $370, Maxwell says. UGG boots are less costly, between $150 and $300.

“You get what you pay for because these boots last for years,” Underwood says, noting that she has a pair of Frye boots that she’s been wearing for nearly 20 years. “They have molded to the shape of my feet and are the most comfortable shoes I have.”

Maxwell says that, like the UGG brand, Frye boot sales at Dillard’s have been on the increase in the last couple years.

“Everyone knows the name ‘Frye,’ and they know it’s a well made boot from a well known company,” she says. “The company still offers the classic cowboy style to updated looks that include a casual style, a rock’n’roll style, a motorcycle style and more. It’s the boot you will wear forever. Dress it up. Dress it down. Founder John A. Frye started the company on March 10, 1863, in a small shop in Marlboro, Mass.

Maxwell credits the increasing popularity of Frye and UGG boots to the updated styles.

“Frye is no longer just the cowboy boot,” she says. “It has always been a big seller and still is, but the styles have been revamped and look knew. There are so many different styles now and they’re all beautiful. They’re also made from quality leather. We get very few returns in Fryes and UGGs.”

Underwood says she wears boots with most everything in her wardrobe ranging from leggings to feminine dresses.

“I get ideas from Pinterest because I can search something like ‘mint green leggings’ and find what what boots look good with it,” she says. “I think the only thing I don’t wear boots with are shorts and that’s only because I don’t think that suits me.”

Caroline Johnson, 53, is excited about the tall, black dress boots that she’s getting from Santa this year.

She specifically asked him for the boots that also have a narrow shaft to accommodate her slim calves with a medium sized heel. The boots are perfect for work and church, she says.

Out of the six pairs of boots she owns, Johnson says she wears her brown pair the most, but expects her new black ones to look better with most her clothes.

“I really like the look of tall slim boots with tights and a slim short skirt, but I wear them with long skirts and dresses as well,” Johnson says. “For some reason, I tend to avoid wearing boots with slacks the one exception being jeans. I think everything works with jeans.”

Still, Johnson likes all styles of boots.

“I’ve got some great cowboy boots, hiking boots, and my favorite are my Land’s End fleece lined rain boots. I just adore them,” she says. “They are my footwear of choice this time of year whenever I walk my dog, and we go on long hikes at Greenway Farm and along the South Chickamauga Greenway.”

Johnson says she wears mostly boots in cooler weather and sandals when it gets warm.

Maxwell says it’s not just the gals wearing boots. Men like them, too, even the UGG boot. Men, locally, tend to favor UGG sheepskin driving moccasins, she says, but Fryes also are extremely popular with men.

For the second year in a row, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway arrived on the Oscars stage to present best picture. This time, the results were a little less exciting.

“Well, that’s how it’s supposed to go, I guess,” host Jimmy Kimmel deadpanned after the duo announced The Shape of Water won the biggest prize of the night no, really, it did. They double checked the envelope. This was not a La La Land Moonlight situation.

Although the show didn’t end with an epic mix up, plenty happened during the nearly four hour telecast on Sunday night. Here’s everything you need to know.

1. Ryan Seacrest’s red carpet experience was . . .

Seacrest vehemently denied the accusations, and E! declared he was cleared after their own investigation, so the network stood its ground as Seacrest served as the lead red carpet anchor. But it was certainly a cloud hanging over the coverage, as many on social media noted how many top celebrities stopped to talk to him (not a lot), and the show essentially tried to pretend that sexual harassment the No. 1 topic in Hollywood these days didn’t exist.

2. Jimmy Kimmel’s monologue.

Kimmel skewered everything from Hollywood’s mistreatment of women (“Here’s how clueless Hollywood is about women: We made a movie called What Women Want, and it starred Mel Gibson.”) to President Donald Trump, saying that the president “called Get Out the best first three quarters of a movie this year.”

And he didn’t let the vice president off the hook. “Out of the nine best picture nominees, only two made more than $100 million. That’s not the point,” Kimmel said. “We don’t make films like Call Me By Your Name for money. We make them to upset Mike Pence.”

It’s that time of year again. Unfortunately we have to ditch the Havaianas and Birkenstocks for something a little, make that a lot, warmer. Whether the extent of your outdoor winter activities is standing outside for the bus in the morning, or going for long walks in the snow, winter footwear is the hardest season to tackle, but it’s the most important if you want to save your toes.

Spring and summer shoes tend to last the longest as they aren’t exposed to many harsh elements. Winter boots on the other hand have to stand up to rain, below freezing temperatures, snow, hail, giant slush puddles and worst of all, salt. Investing in a great pair of winter boots will guarantee your satisfaction, as the best boots pay for themselves and last you from season to season. Canada is known for its winters so getting boots that you can rely on makes a lot of sense.

In order to get through every stage of our winters, it is helpful to have three different types of boot: the rubber boot, the warm snow boot, and the more fashionable leather boot. Having a great pair of each will take you from the streets and the snow to a night out for dinner painlessly. So before you set out to find yourself a new pair of boots for the winter, consider these important tips:

The rubber boot

Dodging puddles is no fun, and nothing is worse than heading into work with soggy shoes and soaked feet that will remain cold and wet for hours. In the winter, wetness is inevitable, rain storms are aplenty and the tiniest snowfall melts into a disastrous system of puddles on the sidewalk.

Brands like Hunter and Tretorn are proof that rubber boots are no longer only for the farmers and the rural set, “for an urban person getting through the city, you need rubber boots,” says popular Toronto shoe store Get Outside’s owner Doug Malcolmson. “Rain boots are for 10 to 5 degrees,” says Malcolmson, “and a polar fleece sock inside will do to keep you warm.” Also try a winter insole to add comfort, and even legwarmers can look great folded over the top of the boot. “You can’t wear an insulated boot into the office,” says Malcolmson, “or your feet will be sweltering,” so this is where the rubber boot comes in most handy.

The warm snow boot

These are a must have for the months of January and February if you want to make it into the summer with a full set of toes! Unfortunately when grabbing a heavy duty pair of boots you may have to sacrifice fashion sense a little, but it’s worth it.

Sorel is a brand that dominates this market, as their boots are made for Arctic conditions and can withstand the coldest of cold. A snow boot has to be waterproof and heavily insulated.

There are tons of warm shoes on the market such as UGG’s,
bailey ugg From frozen feet to toasty toes
Laurentian Chief Moccasins, and Pajar, but these won’t keep your feet dry when the snow melts into them. To make sure that you’re purchasing a snow boot that will last, check that they are guaranteed to perform under temperatures of 20 and lower, and that they are verified waterproof by Goretex. “Most women already have the knee high classic that they love, so this is a great season to mix it up,” says Cleary.

When purchasing leather boots a tight fit is the best, as leather will stretch considerably when you start walking and your feet start sweating. It’s recommended that when you bring your new pair home, wear them around the house to speed up the process of breaking them in, this will save you when it comes time to debut them on the town.

Leather must also be treated before you wear it outside to prevent unsightly stains. Cleary advises spraying boots with a waterproof treatment 3 5 times, letting it dry for an hour in between each coat and then let them dry over night after the last coat before wearing them outside. Also, make sure that you’re buying a thick, high quality leather, “spend money on the classics,” says Cleary “true, there are fun lower price options, but they just won’t last.”Wait! Just a few more last minute tips that go for any and all boots you may purchase.

“Shop for your boots at the end of the day or at what I call the ‘magical cocktail hour’,” says Cleary “this is when your feet are the largest they will be all day.” This is important, because once you’ve worn an expensive boot outside to find it’s all of a sudden too snug, there’s no possibility of returning it (with the exception of leather which stretches). “Another big thing for boots is how you care for them. Salt will kill a boot,” adds Cleary, “when you walk inside make sure that you have a gentle cloth or brush by the door to give your boots a cleaning and remove any erosive residue, as the salt eats and cracks at any material.”

In addition, there has to be good tread on the bottom of your boot so you don’t end up tip toeing the streets in fear of having a wipe out. Some boots such as Frye’s are great quality and will last for years, but don’t have the most traction on the ice. This is where your neighborhood shoe repair store comes in handy. Not only can most make alterations for the calf size of your leg (this comes in handy for those pesky thigh high leather boots you can’t squeeze into) but they can add a layer of abrasive tread to the bottom of almost any shoe, giving you great traction and peace of mind.

And finally, if you’re leaving the house in the morning with a long day ahead of you, carry a pair of indoor flats in your bag or keep a pair at your desk that you can change into once inside, nobody wants to clunk around the office in bulky boots.

Like any proud strawberry one should aspire to be plumb, firm, well rounded and have a solid natural red colouring that delivers a sweet delicate flavour.

The Queensland strawberries I been enjoying lately have been just that, and frankly, I can get enough of them.

Whether I enjoying strawberries for breakfast with Gippsland yoghurt and Pura Veda, strawberry smoothies or just as a sweet afternoon snack, strawberries are just delightful.

I have an abundance of them at home so this week I got another recipe using this charmingly, sweet fruit.

Feeling compelled to bake and not wanting to dash out to the shops to buy eggs (I used them all up on my weekend hot breakfast cook up you see) I had a look around for an egg free cake; I wasn even sure there was such a thing.

Upon my quest I was surprised at the amount of egg free recipes there were out there, stunned also at how many people can eat eggs so for those people, this one for you: Strawberry Cake the eggs.

Now I admit, I not a big cake eater, but as I said last week my doting Miss Foodie followers said they wanted more sweets so I thought this would be a great recipe to try, and indeed it was

When my Strawberry Cake emanated from the oven I was so chuffed I actually baked a cake and it actually looked worthy too.

This egg free Strawberry Cake is a breeze to make and the strawberry flavour throughout is oh so sweetly satisfying, not only for the taste buds, but for the eyes too.

I served it hot out of the oven with fresh whipped cream and a hot cup of earl grey tea how divine it was indeed, a perfect way to end one weekend I say.

Happy eating my foodie friends.
