a difference a week makes! This has truly been the longest week of my life. As we speak the Thomas fire has burned 235,000 acres and destroyed 800 structures. We were given the ok to come back home over the weekend. Here what happened. the fires burned, our sheep, Linen, Paisley and Cashmere, were safely hanging out at the Earl Warren Show Grounds in Santa Barbara. They were well cared for by the selfless team of volunteers from the Santa Barbara Equine Evac. I had never heard of this organization before now, but they are going to be getting a whole bunch of love (and a fat donation) from me and Steve for the holidays!

“When my partner’s mom came home at about 11, that’s when she noticed that the truck was gone,” Izawa explained. when he got to his mother in law’s house to pick up his son for school, and she told him his truck wasn’t here.

The white 2006 4WD Toyota Tundra double cab (license TFD 118) was stolen right out of their car port on Waipahu Street.

“They knew what they were doing,” Izawa said. “Very brazen as well cause there was people home the entire time.”

Izawa did capture the theft on video surveillance and it was quick.

“The angle wasn’t great, but you could vaguely make out someone coming on foot down the road, and then you could see the door open up, and then next thing you know, it’s backing up into the street,” he said. “From the time you see the door open up till you see it backing up is 10 or 15 seconds.”

Izawa isn’t alone.

“Car theft is a big problem in Hawaii,” said State Attorney General Douglas Chin. “It’s lower than it has been before, but really in comparison to violent crimes, that’s often the way that people end up being victimized is through that type of crime.”

According to statistics on the FBI Crime Data Explorer website, 5,549 cars were stolen in Hawaii in 2016, down from 5,779 the previous year. with higher instances of car theft, Hawaii ranks higher than the national average.

There were 395 cars stolen for every 100,000 people in Hawaii in 2016 compared to 236 cars for every 100,000 people nationwide.

How often do people get their car back once it’s stolen?

“A lot of it depends upon the circumstances,” Chin said. “If there was an eye witness, or if there are finger prints, or if there is some sort of evidence then that’s a better likely hood. But unfortunately for the people who are victimized by car theft, sometimes they don’t see it again and that’s very sad.”

How often are car thieves caught and prosecuted?

“The biggest challenge in prosecuting a car theft has to be in identifying the person who was actually inside the vehicle or using it,” explained Chin. “We still have to do what detectives all throughout the decades have done, which is rely upon fingerprint evidence. Hopefully there’s an eye witness and so sometimes, we’re successful, other times, we’re not.”

ugg cozy slippers vehicle crashes up in Ann Arbor since adoption of crosswalk ordinance

The number of crashes involving cars and pedestrians in Ann Arbor has increased since the city adopted its pedestrian safety ordinance, an analysis of statistics shows.

But, a city project manager said it’s not clear the ordinance itself has had an impact on those numbers, especially since it wasn’t enforced during its first year.

The death of a University of Michigan student who was hit by a car while she was crossing Plymouth Road has raised new questions about the safety of pedestrians in the city and prompted a city council member to address the issue Monday night. The investigation continues.

The city’s pedestrian crosswalk ordinance requires vehicles to stop for pedestrians standing at the curb of a This is slightly different than the Michigan Uniform Traffic Code requirement of yielding the right of way to pedestrians who are within a

Even though Ann Arbor is safer than other Michigan cities when it comes to pedestrian crashes, statistics from Michigan Traffic Crash Facts show the number of pedestrian crashes in Ann Arbor have risen in the last few years.

When the ordinance was first passed in 2010 and when Ann Arbor adopted the UTC there were 45 pedestrian car crashes. A year later, that number shot up to 63 crashes before falling slightly to 60 crashes in 2012.

The number of crashes in 2012 and 2011 was markedly higher both years than for any of the years from 2004 until 2009. During those years, as few as 36 vehicle pedestrian crashes were recorded in 2006. The highest number, 52, was recorded in 2007 and 2008.

Pat Cawley, senior project manager for the city of Ann Arbor, said he not sure the pedestrian ordinance has affected the number of crashes. He noted the ordinance was originally passed in 2010, started to be enforced in 2011 and was revised in 2012.

That moving target makes it hard for Cawley to accurately state how the ordinance has affected the frequency of pedestrian car crashes.

do see an uptick in the last couple years, but we don know how many more pedestrians are out there or if there more vehicular traffic out there, he said. been an increase in crashes overall. As the economy picked up, more people are driving more and crashes have increased. Road is one of the most heavily trafficked areas in the city, with about 24,000 vehicles moving on the corridor every day, according to the Washtenaw Area Transportation Study.

Cawley said the city tracks the usage of the RRFB crosswalk through how many times the buttons that activate the lights are pushed throughout the day. He said the Plymouth Road crosswalks, installed in 2012, get at least 200 button pushes per day.

City of Ann Arbor Transportation Manager Eli Cooper said the crosswalk is intended to at drivers to make them aware they coming up to a pedestrian crossing.

However, Cooper said he recognizes that city officials need to make sure the public is educated about crosswalks in Ann Arbor.

is only one component. Education is a fundamental element, as is enforcement, he said.

He added, trying to educate motorists and pedestrians how to maneuver safely on our transportation system. changes have come to Plymouth Road crosswalks during the last 10 years. An island was installed in 2003, and RRFB lights are the most recent change. However, some residents still think more must be done.

Susan Filipiak mother, Helen, was killed crossing Plymouth Road when she was struck by a driver in 2002. Like Williams, Helen Filipiak was struck by a driver during the middle of the day. She was trying to cross the street during a walk from the Sunrise Assisted Living Facility.

Susan Filipiak said the crosswalk at that time was just lines painted on the pavement. There was no pedestrian ordinance at the time, but the Michigan Uniform Traffic Code language giving the right of way to pedestrians in a crosswalk was in effect.

It clear that words on a page aren enough, Filipiak said.

(city officials) would not look at more stop lights there, and that what it really needs, she said. more pedestrian crossing zones, they need stop lights. said the RRFBs have been working as advertised in most circumstances and Cawley added that the mean speeds on Plymouth Road have slowed since the RRFBs were introduced. The number of drivers yielding to pedestrians has also increased, Cawley said.

However, Cawley said it difficult for city traffic engineers to know where pedestrian car crashes take place the most on the city roadways.

and bike crashes are a lot less frequent, he said. have a hard time really tracking them and seeing where hot spots are. With vehicle crashes, it easier because there are more of them and we can trend them a little better. a vocal contingent of Ann Arbor residents is demanding something be done, including an independent traffic engineering evaluation of the city crosswalks. Some are pushing for the complete repeal of the crosswalk ordinance.

Filipiak said it time for city leaders to decide if pedestrian safety is more important than a quick drive into downtown Ann Arbor from the east.

Arbor is styling itself as a walkable city, accessible to pedestrians, she said. something can be done, it shameful. map shows the location of all fatal pedestrian crashes in the city of Ann Arbor between 2003 and 2013. There have been six such crashes.

A joint Australian Vietnamese study investigated the links between the diet and bones of more than 2,700 people and discovered that vegetarians had 5% less dense bones than meat eaters, said lead researcher Tuan Nguyen.

Vegans, who refrain from eating all animal products, were mostly affected, with 6% weaker bones.

However, Nguyen found that there was “practically no difference” between the bone density of meat eaters and ovolactovegarians, who do not eat meat or seafood but include eggs and dairy in their diets.

“The results suggest that vegetarian diets, particularly vegan diets, are associated with lower bone mineral density,” Nguyen wrote in the study published in Thursday’s edition of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

“But the magnitude of the association is clinically insignificant,” he added. As to whether vegetarians’ lower bone density is linked to an increased risk of fracture has yet to be determined, says Nguyen, who is from Sydney’s Garvan Institute for Medical Research and collaborated on the project with the Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine in Ho Chi Minh City.

“Given the rising number of vegetarians, roughly 5% (of people) in Western countries, and the widespread incidence of osteoporosis, the issue is worth resolving.” Nguyen said.

Cronk and McIntosh eventually sought refuge under the concert stage. And when the gunfire stopped, Cronk got his friend to an ambulance.

Cronk says McIntosh is recovering well, and may return home soon. Initially, the two men thought McIntosh had been hit with three bullets. But they later learned the wounds were caused by a single bullet that entered McIntosh’s side, traveled through his chest, and then exited his arm.

“I was just talking with Rob yesterday, and we don’t want to focus on the evil part,” said Cronk. “You know what, it happened. And now, we’re ready to focus on the positive parts. And so we just want to find all the positivity we can out of this situation like this.”

Cronk said the positives include the bravery of the first responders the night of the shooting, and the actions of ordinary people, who risked their lives to help strangers.

“There were so many people there helping strangers,” he said. “I mean, there were heroes everywhere.”

Cronk said he is already planning a return trip to Las Vegas a year from now.

“Route 91 is going to happen, and I said, ‘I’ll be the first one to buy my ticket,'” he proclaimed. “I’m coming back, because evil will not conquer good. It will not win.”

Cronk will take part in a fundraising event Tuesday evening, in order to help the families of two Alaskans who died in the shooting: Adrian Murfitt and Dorene Anderson.

Over the years, such local legends as Elvis, members of the Rat Pack, Celine Dion and Wayne Newton have been honored in wax. So has the Blue Man Group. But not a certain longtime Strip headliner (more about this person in a moment) who wants the honor more than anybody.

Up next for wax ian treatment are dissimilarly matched, but similarly famous, Las Vegas newsmakers Donny and Marie Osmond, and Mike Tyson. Donny and Marie were announced in October, and their unveiling at the Venetian attraction will be in 2016, when they return to the stage at the Flamingo.

Tyson will join Muhammad Ali and onetime rival Evander Holyfield (yes, with the gnawed off right ear) as an honoree. He’ll be on hand for a ceremony Dec. 1, joining his wax cast mates from “The Hangover” film series.

But left out of the parade is a man who likely wants it more than anyone: Frank Marino of “Divas Las Vegas.” He has a street named for him and two stars on the Las Vegas Walk of Fame but has never found the right avenue to be depicted in wax.

“After being here for 30 years, trying every angle, every connection, every PR agent and celebrity I know, it’s not going to happen,” Marino said. “I really need to be on TV to make that happen.”

A Madame Tussauds spokeswoman said last year that Marino had been put “under consideration” and a request was issued to execs in the attraction’s offices in London.

Marino just turned 52. Goodman was in his mid 60s when he was honored. There still is time at Madame Tussauds, where time always stands still.

Kevyn Wynn is launching a fashion line meshing two words we’re not used to seeing meshed: “luxe” and “slippers.”

The daughter of Steve and Elaine Wynn is launching a line of cocktail slippers under her Kevyn Wynn brand. A preview of the line is set for Dec. 1 at Wynn Las Vegas.

Wynn says she came up with the concept of high end slippers as she was shopping for slip ons near her home in Southern California. All she could find was a pair of Australian made Uggs.

Wynn, who designed the robes and slippers used for guests at Wynn and Encore, went to work on designing fancy slippers tailored to her own tastes. She delivered the designs to a supplier who had worked on the resorts’ slipper and robe collections, and hit a factory in Italy to produce the line.

Each pair will cost $250 to $300, which on the meter of slipper pricing either is high (mine) or quite reasonable (for those who wear silk slippers). The line will be sold at the home stores at Wynn and Encore by the end of the month.

And look out for another Wynn family member entering the world of fashion retail: Wynn has planned to branch out to a children’s line, designed by her daughter Zoe Friedman, who is all of 11 years old.

Through the grapevine of conversation comes this morsel related to the High Roller at the Linq. Several weeks ago, an organization of swingers (those who swap partners for recreational activity, specifically) planned to occupy one of the cabins to close off a night of partying. This is the sort of partying favored by swingers, if you get the drift. The full rotation of a High Roller ride is 30 minutes.

A member of the Caesars Entertainment employment force overheard the plan and called staffers at the wheel, where a member of security swiftly was summoned.

When the swingers, numbering more than 30 (hopefully an even number) boarded the cabin, the security officer stepped in just as the doors closed. Too bad, kids.

Lucknow, Dec 15 With monk politician Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at the helm, non vegetarian fare was off the plates at a lunch and dinner served on the first day of the annual IAS Week in the Uttar Pradesh capital here, an official said.

This new development, he said was “keeping in mind the likes and dislikes” of Chief Minister Adityanath, who is a vegetarian.

In the dinner served at the 2016 IAS week at the Raj Bhawan hosted by Governor Ram Naik, it was a sumptuous spread of Avadh non vegetarian cuisine. This time, however, the bureaucrats missed it, a disappointed official told IANS.

In the past, at all occasions where the head of the government or of the state was there, non vegetarian dishes were always served.

Former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, or his predecessors,

The IAS week has been held annually barring between 2007 and 2012, when the then Chief Minister Mayawati did away with the routine events.

The week is celebrated with much fanfare every year with the UP cadre IAS officials dancing, singing, acting, playing and merry making together, along with their spouses.

Cricket matches between IAS XI and politicians during the Raj had made waves and were widely covered by the national media.

But the effect this time round has at least ensured that in the monk turned politician regime, non vegetarian food will not be available.

So instead, what was served included Shahi Kofta, Dal Makhani, Paneer Tikka, fried rice, Handi Paneer, gulab jamun and gajar ka halwa.
